Market timing

What ERCOT forward curves mean for your renewal.

Published July 2026 · 5 minute read

Forward prices show what the market charges today for power delivered in a future month. They are the reason renewal timing matters.

Procurement advisory

A forward curve is the set of prices at which power can be bought today for delivery in future months. It is the market's current answer to the question every renewal asks: what will electricity cost over the term I am about to sign?

When a supplier quotes a fixed rate, that quote is built from the forward curve for your delivery period, plus the supplier's costs and margin. The curve moves every day, which is why the same request quoted two weeks apart can come back at different prices.

What moves the curve

In ERCOT, forward prices respond to natural gas prices, expected weather, generation coming on or off the grid, and how much supply is committed for a given season. Summer months carry more risk premium than shoulder months, and years further out generally trade with less certainty than the year ahead.

Why expiration dates make poor timing signals

Most organizations start looking at renewal when the contract is close to expiring. The market does not care about that date. A favorable window can open eighteen months before expiration and be gone at renewal time. Buying because the calendar says so means accepting whatever the curve happens to show that week.

How buyers use the curve

The practical use is comparison. Today's forward prices for your term can be compared against your current contracted rate, against recent history, and against your budget. That turns the renewal from a deadline into a decision: act when the market offers a price that fits the plan, hold when it does not.

Where advisory work comes in

Sector 7 monitors ERCOT forward curves alongside weather patterns and supplier capacity, and advises clients to act when a favorable window opens, sometimes months before renewal. The structure of the contract decides how much of that market movement ever reaches the bill.
